What Are The Different Box Types?

There are numerous box, packing, and folding carton styles to choose from, each with a distinct purpose.

This blog will help you better understand which box type is appropriate for you, whether you want to exhibit your packed products on your retail shelf, find the perfect packaging for your handcrafted products, or box up a gift to offer to your clients.

What Are the Different Box Types?

Product boxes, custom boxes, paper boxes, folding carton boxes, gift boxes, and other packaging options are available. There are numerous names for boxes, but there are also numerous sorts of boxes, such as the straight tuck-end box, the pillow box, the snap-lock bottom box, and others!

So, before you start looking for the appropriate packaging for your product or other products, you need first understand what all of these different sorts of boxes are used for so you can choose the best ones.

Here are the most common varieties of folding carton boxes, so you can get your custom packing off to a good start.

Boxes with Tuck-Ends

Tuck-end boxes, also known as tuck-top boxes or tuck-end paper boxes, are one of the most common types of boxes found in retail stores since they are the most handy for the customer due to their ease of assembly and use.

The closure tabs on the top and bottom of the tuck-end box are the same style, with two smaller tabs that shut in and one bigger tab, or flap, in the middle that folds over and tucks in to close the box.

Tuck-end boxes are classified into two types: straight tuck-end boxes (STE boxes) and reverse tuck-end boxes (RTE boxes).

Straight tuck-end boxes are so named because the top and bottom openings open and close in the same manner, whereas reverse tuck-end boxes open and close in the opposite direction.

These boxes are great for packaging any light item, such as soap, light bulbs, essential oils, tea packs, cosmetics, medications, organic items, and more.

Snap-Lock Containers

Snap-lock boxes, also known as snap-lock bottom boxes or 1-2-3 bottom boxes, are a popular box type that, unlike tuck-end boxes, can package larger products. This is due to the snap-lock box's bottom having four flaps that interlock with each other, resulting in a tighter and more secure closure.

These boxes not only allow you to package heavier things, but they are also a few cents cheaper than tuck-end boxes since the way they are structured allows for more boxes to be printed on one sheet of paper—less paper used means less money spent on printing.

Although snap-lock boxes are slightly less expensive and can contain heavier things than the popular tuck-end box, they take slightly longer to assemble because they include an extra flap on the bottom that must be linked together for best function.

These boxes are great for practically any item you can think of, including candles, medical supplies, perfumes, food, clothing, household products, pet supplies, and so much more.

Pillow Cases

Box for Pillows

Pillow boxes, sometimes known as pillow packaging boxes, derive their name from its distinctive shape, which resembles a pillow when constructed.

These boxes are ideal for packing little and light products such as candy, jewelry, cosmetics, and so on, and are frequently used to package gifts, fast food items, party favors, and small retail items.

Pillow boxes, unlike traditional boxes, have only four sides: a front, back, and two opening sides.

These boxes are really simple to assemble since they just snap into place and the two flaps on either end fold over on top of each other and are pulled down to close the box.

These boxes are not suitable for displaying on a retail shelf because they lack a flat edge for stacking or resting level, causing the front of the box to be seen at the time of purchase. However, these boxes are ideal for giving as gifts, favors, packing promotional things for mailing, or boxing up items such as jewelry or cosmetics.

Hanging Baskets

Box for hanging

A hanging box, also known as a five-panel hanging box or box with hang tab, is normally constructed with a tuck-end or snap-lock box form and an extended back panel with a Euro or sombrero-type hole to allow it to be hung on a hanging display system.

Because of their hanging capability, these boxes are ideal for point of purchase marketing and are used to package many commodities in retail outlets.

These boxes are ideal for displaying technological products, automotive items, health and wellness products, beauty products, and other items in your store.

pick a snap-lock box for heavier things and mention in the project description that you want to add a hanging tab; if the items you want to package are lighter, pick a tuck-end box.

Boxes for Dispensing

Dispensing Box

Dispenser boxes can be manufactured in either a tuck-end or snap-lock box form, but with a perforated slit to readily tear so that individual goods can be packaged and taken from the box without having to open the closure tabs.

These boxes are great for individually packed things such as supplements, tea and coffee bags, hand wipes, candy, disposable gloves, bandages, and other medical supplies.

If you want to make unique dispenser boxes, simply select whether you want a snap-lock box or a tuck-end box and note that you want a dispenser embellishment in your project overview.
